What is Subversion?

Subversion is a well known open source version control system. Version control, or sometimes referred to as revision control, is the "management of multiple revisions of the same unit of information" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revision_control). Subversion is a set of tools to accomplish that. It is mostly used in Software Development to manage source code, but Subversion, or version control in general, can and should easily be adopted to eg. document management or image management.

Why is version control so important?

Version control of files is essential for managing any form of collaborative or distributed development. Users need to track changes to know why they occured. Therefore they can compare older versions to newer ones including knowing the reason of differences. Furthermore they can track down problems introduced by a specific revision of a file to a reason and user. With the help of features like branching and merging, users can develop parallel and indepently on different aspects of their work within the same project. Additionally the can operate remotely or offline and merge their changes later on. Users can even work on the same content. Without version control it is nearly impossible to manage the processes described above.

Subversion is an open source project, and the maintainers behind this project used to publish their source code only. Compiled binaries are only available on a voluntary basis. Since binaries aren't yet published for our target plattform, Windows 2003 x64, we decided to create our own binaries with all the nessecary dependencies to setup a full system.
